If I create say matrix with employees on rows and months on columns with expenses in values, I currently cannot sort by a particular month to see who were the top spenders in that month. I can only sort the totals.
Excel allows sorting on individual column values. Need similar functionality in the matrix as well.

unfortunately this is still a not resolvable challenge , matrix columns cannot be sorted if you have more then one field on the column axis. hint: zebrabi visual can sort on any column but its not free

Yes, this is basic feature which should be included.

I agree that this would be very useful. The default action of filtering is counter intuitive when clicking on the value header(s), and of course is a different action to selecting the totals.
Filtering only really makes sense when clicking on the column values above the value header(s).
