With so many types of artifacts in the new Fabric experience, it is *incredibly* likely that a developer will need to work on multiple items of different types (and therefore with different screens in the app). Many of the buttons in the UI are not recognized as hyperlinks, so we cannot open them in a new tab by interacting with them. When these things are not recognized as hyperlinks, then we can only navigate with the left-click that is supported by your frontend framework.

As a concrete example, I am currently working on both a Data warehouse table and a pipeline. Both of these show up at the bottom left sidebar nav with recently accessed items. But, I cannot quickly open one with a single click in a new tab. My options right now are both flow-breaking:

  1. Navigate away from my work-in-progress item to go look at the other artifact.
  2. Open a new tab, navigate to the web app, find the right workspace, then open the right artifact

The various common methods of opening in a new tab that I am aware of are. Please, if you choose to implement this, do not hard-code support for only these things, but instead fix the root cause. I am fully open to the possibility that my knowledge of browsers is incomplete, so do not let my ignorance constrain the solution.

  • Middle click
  • Control/command click
  • Right click > open in new tab
