We have an enterprise datawarehouse that feeds to SSAS and we are using our SSAS Tabular models as our data source for PowerBI. In SSAS are using the description property in the measures & columns to help users better understand which fields to use.
It would be great if we could bring through these descriptions as tooltips on the fields when using an SSAS data source. Currently all that shows up is the tablename & field name, which is redundant when looking in the field list. I think it would really add to the usability if users could hover over and get the field description straight from SSAS.

The latest release of Power BI Desktop does indeed flow the Description property from SSAS through to your field list and field well when you're working in Live Connect mode. It looks like that was the majority of the requests in this thread so I'm going to close it. We've still got backlog items to push those descriptions through to other places like the Data View and even into visuals for consumers - no ETA but we'd like to do that in future too. I see a few requests for *copying* the description when you're importing from SSAS (or oData etc.) - please create new suggestions for that so we can see the interest in each of those separately! Thanks!

RE: Bring the Description property from SSAS models through as a tooltip
Still required to show up as a tooltip on Column names
RE: Bring the Description property from SSAS models through as a tooltip
It would be good if the description was also visible as tool tip in Power BI Report Server
RE: Bring the Description property from SSAS models through as a tooltip
This is a great feature but we want the same for measures. As of now, if we enter a description for a Measure in SSAS, it will not show up in Power BI. This would be a great feature as this will help BI team/Super users to know the underlying formula/description.

..it would be fantastic if the field properties flowed through to the visual tooltips - much richer user experience.

We've got the field properties in POWER BI. Now let's auto POPULATE IT in the same way the SYNC DESCRIPTIONS functionality works in BIDS (SSDT) HELPER. It allows you to take any extended property from SQL Server RDBMS and import its contents to an SSAS table or column description. We should close the loop in POWER BI and allow table and column descriptions to be imported from SSAS to POWER BI field and table properties.
Other data sources can be considered (Azure AS, Azure SQL DW, Oracle column comments, etc), but at the very least, lets import (or show) column descriptions from the SSAS Tabular column descriptions when in live connection mode.

Similarly, for OData feeds, it would be great if Power BI pulled the descriptions of entity sets and properties directly from OData metadata annotations, for example Org.OData.Core.V1.Description.

RE: Bring the Description property from SSAS models through as a tooltip
I totally agree. This feature was available in Power View and should be in Power BI too.

Have added table descriptions to the tables in the data model. Really nice how they show up in the query view. Would be great to have them show up in the report field view and the database view along with column and measure descriptions.
