Hi,

The groups which are created when a workspace is created or teams group is created is a Microsoft 365 unified group. We discovered that it is not possible to share Power BI reports to Microsoft 365 unified groups.

However, according to the Microsoft 365 groups definition, we would expect it to give us the ability to share Power BI reports. Indeed, a "Microsoft 365 groups are used for collaboration between users".

As a solution, Microsoft support proposed us to create manually security groups. This is not an efficient way of working and this is why I suggest potential improvements:

  • Option 1: Make possible Power BI report sharing to Microsoft 365 unified groups

  • Option 2: Add the checkbox “create a security group” when creating a workspace or a teams group. So that the workspace/Teams will automatically get a security group. If this option is chosen, it would be great to be able to modify existing workspace/groups

RE: Share Power BI reports / dashboard with Microsoft 365 unified group

Voted! I've tested and I can share datasets and apps with Microsoft 365 groups, but I can't share reports? I don't understand. Using Security Groups isn't a great option as it leaves all the maintenance work with the few that can manage them. On the other hand, O365 groups' management can easily be shared with other users, and reused in other MS applications (SharePoint, Planner, Teams, etc).

This is low in votes but if implemented, it would solve a major problem for those of us managing access across multiple MS apps.

RE: Share Power BI reports / dashboard with Microsoft 365 unified group

This is definitely needed. I had a MS Premier support case (120091724006904) on this already in 2020. I was told it was up for discussion in the product team and as I know Microsoft is investing in more integration between Teams and Power BI, I thought that this should end up on their agenda.

A way to look at this is to say "Who should even work with the legacy AD Security Groups this days..."

And in fact, Power BI is already fully supporting the O365 Groups. The problem is that we can't manually assign O365 Groups to Reports or Datasets. We can though assign one single exclusive O365 Group by first creating a Teams/Gen1 workspace and then upgrade to Gen2 and split the Power BI workspace from the Teams site. This will give you a Workspace with the inherited O365 Group. Just saying this to point out that O365 are already natively supported, we just can't assign them :-(
