Studies have shown that readers prefer charts with annotations providing additional context, explaining data points or trends. Currently, the only way we can do that with default visuals is to put a text box on top of them (because we want the text next to the data point(s) it explains. But the visual and textbox don't always maintain relative position and size with the two separate objects.
I would like to see the ability to overlay plain text in a chart at the top or bottom of a the plot area in a visual. We would need the ability to left/center/right justify the text so that it sits near the correct data points. So if you look at this mockup, the textbox would span the entire horizontal range of the plot area, at the top or bottom. We would want to be able to change the justification and maybe the text alignment (top/middle/bottom). Not all positions would work well with every chart, but that is up to the designer to configure.

RE: Ability to overlay text in visuals that works with resizing
And even if you can add annotations through separate objects, it would encourage more people to add them if it were part of the visual.
