Now that the "analyze in excel" has been released it would be nice if Excel Online recognized Power BI an internal data source.
This would allow users to make Pivot tables in excel (connected to a data model) and upload them as "First Class Citizen" excel files with full functionality.
Don't know if you can make excel pivottables into a custom visual?
Or just an excel custom visual - this would really help out on your tables, which (design wise) are not your proudest moment ;o)

Would love this as we have several users that rely on Excel manipulation and visualization instead of the standard table.

NEED. Allowing Excel Files in SharePoint online to refresh from a PBI.COM/AzureAS Datamodel does NOT generate the next Excel-Hell (as mentioned in prev comment) in my opinion but gives the user the freedom to choose the best design (excel or pbi-report) for the given use case...also matrix/Table-visual got better they are still HUGE limited compared to excel pivots/Cubeformulas with conditional formatting, sparklines.... if you want to report "numbers" excel will long be the better tool to do the job. PBI Desktop should focus on its strength=visual and interactive storytelling

Would be a great improvement.
i would be able to provide a full power bi report and at the same time the excel associated.
So easier to drive a whole company quietly but surely to these new kind of solutions without to much disturbing it (otherwise people may simply contest the advanced value of it)

I think this is really inappropriate! Microsoft took Power Query, View and Pivot out of Excel and created the great tool Power BI, and now you want to put i back in to Excel. Why? By doing this, you'll create your own excel hell 2.0 again, where every employee creates his own version of the truth.

Can you please make this work in the same way as on premesis SharePoint, so that when a Power BI Data source is refreshed it also refreshes and saves any workbooks that are displayed in Power BI which are also connected to the Data source?

This would be a very valuable addition, can't wait for it!! For now we've had to build the same powerpivot data model in Excel (across multiple workbooks), where it would be nice instead to define that data model once in PowerBI as a dataset and hook your Excel Online pivot table/slicers to that data model.

Being an external data source - Excel Online does not allow for updating/refresh which kills the pivot functionality today.
