Currently the Power BI service can only pass the stored credentials to gateway data sources, except for SSAS where it will also pass an effective username.
It would be ideal to have some sort of feature to pass effective usernames to other gateway data sources. Other BI systems tackle this by allowing for Initial SQL to get passed on the commands so you can pass an "execute as [user]" prefixed command.
The underlying data source can then correctly check and log data access instead of relying on rebuilt RLS at the power BI level.
