We have a single Date Dimension table to hold all of our dates, and all of our visualizations utilize this table. The issues arises when we have dates in the slicer for which there is no data.
Example: You have two stores, one of which opened in 2014 and another in 2016. You would want to have a date slicer (even at the year or year/month level) not show any dates from 2014-2015 when you filter to the store which wasn't in operation at that time.
