In a Matrix visual, you can add additional fields to the Rows area, but for every addition, you get an additional level of breakdown in the hierarchy. In typical analysis models, there are always attributes by which nobody would want to see aggregations. These fields are 'non-aggregation attributes'. In the old Analysis Server Cube days, you could assign this at the field level.

Consider this example: You want a Matrix to show aggregations by Customer, but for user convenience you want to show the Customer City and Phone number. You are stuck building a Matrix that, in order to see all the information for any one customer, you need to expand the Customer node, then expand the City node (of which there is only one), then expand the Phone Number node (again, only one value at this level of breakdown). You end up A) wasting space as it requires THREE rows with sub-totals at each row, and B) is extra work for the user.
