Currently open a local file from Desktop is not possible and from browser is very tedious as explained on May 2017 update:

https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/power-bi-desktop-may-feature-summary/#urlTables

"If you want to use file URLs, there are some limitations. They will not open in the Power BI Desktop, only in web browsers. For most browsers, you will need to right click on the link, copy the link address, and paste the URL in a new tab"

It will be great if can be improved the way to open the files in same way as with web images or files (http://).

Yes, we have the same issue. We may have links to additional reports or references in the report, but it makes the report seem cumbersome to the user with the additional steps.

Yes, please this needs to be a think. With the large volume of being able to pull data and click on the link directly is beneficial. Having to copy and paste all files paths defeats the purpose of the visuals.

We don't have many files on the internet/web and need to be able to link to an internal file path. Instead I have to manually copy and paste the path into a Windows Explorer for each file I want to view/see which slows me down tremendously. Like others have said, Tableau has offered this ability/functionality for quite some time. It's 2023 and Power BI needs to allow for this feature.

This would be a much-appreciated feature, it seems something easy to address.

We need this for our embedded power bi product very urgently! Customers are always asking to start external applications out of the reports.
