If I have a date/time field in my data, I should be able to view metrics by year, by month, by day, by day of week, by time of day, and so on. I should be able to drill from month down to day, back up to month, and so on.

I should also be able to ask for 'last 7 days' or '12 months ago' in my formulas, filters etc.

I shouldn't need to create a "Date" table and all of these fields in my data. As long as I have a date/time field in my data, I should be able to do this analysis easily in the Power BI report (or Q&A).

In the May release of Power BI Desktop we shipped a preview of the relative date slicer. To learn more check out this blog post: https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/power-bi-desktop-may-feature-summary/ In addition, the new Quick Measures feature has a bunch of time intelligence calculations that you can add to your model. Learn more about that feature here: https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/quick-measures-preview/

Creating a time hierachy based on a date field does not work that well. If i go down from years to months on a visial, i should retain the year information next to each month so that the months don't show me totals from all years. I should have 24 months visible for 2 years and not just 12. Same thing with months and days.

I really see the benefits of Power BI but it is hard to justify the rollout of this product without this essential feature. It would be great to get an update on the status of this. For now, we will hold off on Power BI

You guys generally provide superb products but every so often one really does wonder what the thought process is behind some of your decisions. In the top 10 voted ideas all except two are either planned or started. But this essential feature, which really should not need a voting process, sits on "Under review" for 17 months. Not even "Planned" at this point? Love the idea of Power BI, think the speed of updates is generally brilliant, and yet the product is very nearly unusable for us as a company because of this massive oversight.

This was asked 1.5 years ago. How has this not been implemented yet? Could you PLEASE prioritize this. It has a LOT of votes.

Any update on this? I found that when I create a graph that spans multiple years and drill down into month, Power BI averages out the months from different years. So January 2015 and January 2016 simply become "January" and the values are the average of the two. This destroys any ability to look at trends across multiple years without having to manually define years and months in the query editor or in the raw data. In standard excel Pivot table graphs years easily drill down to months within set year

This is absolutely essential. Any competitive product offers this functionality. This should also include the ability to define the beginning day of the week as this can differ between organizations, some use Monday to Sunday, some use Sunday to Saturday, while some use the first day of the year as their start of a week. Including MOM/YOY and percent changes could easily place Power BI alongside the pack leaders for enterprise BI tools.

I also wish you could say "show many anything from the last 7 days" rather than choosing an exact date

At the moment it is impossible to calculate the average time this function is very useful and available in Excel.
