First of all, very impressive with the features Power BI Public Preview, I have one question regarding the Salesforce Dataset though, can it connect to custom objects? I've looked but can't find where it can.

Thanks!

At the moment we don't import custom objects (we have to request specific things through their API) but we could improve this in future. We could also import custom fields on their standard objects. Who else would find it useful? Please add your vote if you would!

RE: Salesforce dataset to connect to custom objects and fields

As a 70+ user account of an independent CRM company on the SFDC platform, Power BI is pointless to us without the ability to utilize custom objects and fields as none of the standard objects are used in this CRM. I was excited to see what this could do but looks like I'll have to wait.

While the suggestion below is possible, that defeats the enticing draw of a drag & drop/easy to use UI. While as the admin I could set much of that up, that's too complicated for our department managers to sift through and manage on a daily/weekly basis.

The out-of-box Salesforce content in the Power BI dashboards do have a standard schema as Will describes. However, users can also choose to import Salesforce Reports, which could include custom objects/fields based on how they were created.

Another option is to create your own reports using the Power BI Designer or Power Query in Excel. In these tools it's possible to connect to all Salesforce Objects, including custom objects and fields. Once imported, you can create your own reports and upload them to a Power BI dashboard.

We certainly require the use of custom fields in most of our reporting, I can't use this without them.

This would be incredibly, incredibly useful. I work for a very large corporation looking for an enterprise BI solution that can utilize our legacy SQL data and Salesforce to create meaningful reports, and without the custom field/object functionality PowerBI doesn't really work for us.

and worse, no custom fields in the standard objects pull through. will submit that as a separate idea.

Without Custom Objects, it would probably be a no-go for us! We invested a lot of time to customize SalesForce.
