Unable to Open Document; We weren't able to restore the saved database to the model

I just updated to the latest version to take advantage of the new features; but it has busted a bunch of my report files.

Whenever I open a previously created report and save it (even with no changes what so ever) the file becomes unusable, with the error "Unable to Open Document We weren't able to restore th saved database to the model" thrown at launch.

The files were created with Power BI Desktop 2.39.4526.362 and my projects get corrupted when saving them using Power BI Desktop 2.40.4554.361

The projects work in the latest version until the file is saved and Power BI Desktop is closed, but any attempt to reopen the file will throw the error.

I have reverted to version 2.39.4526.362 and do not experience this issue any more, so I'll have to do my customer case with the older version (which is annoying since I really wanted to use the Top N filter). Upgrading to 2.40.4554.361 promptly brings the issue back.

This issue was previously reported, but apparently marked as "closed" with no further discovery, as seen on this URL:
https://ideas.powerbi.com/forums/360879-issues/suggestions/15693186-unable-to-open-document-we-weren-t-able-to-restore#comments

From messing arround with the files I would speculate that the error is related to a corruption of the model metadata; I managed to provoke various errors where the application seemed to think that the model could not be saved because existing entities with the same names already existed. I have sent "frowns" with those errors, with the trace files attached.

I am happy to provide the actual report files for further diagnosis if required, as the data is not very sensitive. Just please don't dismiss this issue without looking into it.

Thanks

Sorry for the trouble - we had a bug related to reports containing measures with the same name as a table in the model. We've since fixed this in Power BI Desktop and the Power BI Service. Please download the latest build of Power BI Desktop from powerbi.com and try again. Thanks for your patience.

That fix has been released, and it has resolved this issue for me. Can others please test and post your results.

RE: Unable to Open Document; We weren't able to restore the saved database to the model

While the PBI Desktop issue appears to be resolved by the latest build, myself and others are getting an "error: (404) Not Found" when publishing an unchanged model from PBI Desktop

I also get Status 500 error when using Get Data from app.powerbi.com:

Activity IDbd265ad6-bff3-436c-ba58-0c5054afe37b

It seems clear the PBI Desktop fix has not been applied to app.powerbi.com.

The trigger seems to be a pre-existing Measure that has the same name as a Table. It seems you do not have to modify the PBIX file to strike this error.

RE: Unable to Open Document; We weren't able to restore the saved database to the model

As I presume this needs the attention of a different set of Dev/Support people, I've created a new Support issue for it:

https://ideas.powerbi.com/forums/360879-issues/suggestions/16963468-unable-to-publish-or-upload-get-data-when-measure

Please vote and comment to raise the priority of this issue.

I downloaded the latest version (2.40.4554.463) and I too am now able to open the Desktop file again (and save it and still open it after). However now I have received an error trying to publish it:

Publishing failed for an unknown reason. (FailedtoRefreshPackageAfterImportError)

With version 2.40.4554.463 I can now open the reports that I was unable to before. So far so good on the issue I was experiencing.

RE: Unable to Open Document; We weren't able to restore the saved database to the model

I heard just now that there is a new build available on the download page to fix this issue.

I've tested it and it does avoid the "A measure ... already exits" issue that I encountered. With that new build, I was also able to open a file which was saved after striking that error, which previously gave an error: Unable to Open Document We weren't able to restore the saved database to the model

Please still take careful backups of your files and dont rely on this - I have conducted a very limited test for one scenario.

Here are the version numbers:
2.40.4554.421 - has issues
2.40.4554.463 - new build

Can others please test and post your results.

I am having what appears to be a related issue since the 10/31 update where it will not open previously working reports due to a circular dependency issue.

Going back to a prior version of PBI desktop works for now, but really hoping that this is fixed soon.

'@Adam, the only solution currently is to revert to backup files, or if you have File History enabled, to go back to a file saved before upgrading the Power BI Desktop client. Then downgrade to the previous version, and continue working on that until a fix is offered.

RE: Unable to Open Document; We weren't able to restore the saved database to the model

All of our files will now not open and when reverting back to the old version the data will not refresh. This is a catastrophe for ourselves and our customers who now cannot use Power BI as required.
